Friedrich Schiller buses in front of the main university building

Friedrich Schiller University Jena is currently preparing to integrate artificial intelligence into its long-standing content management system EGOCMS. The university is pursuing an approach that fits perfectly with its AI strategy: self-hosted large language models (LLMs) for maximum data sovereignty and practical benefits.

Technical implementation: AI on its own infrastructure

In accordance with the university's guidelines on the use of AI, Jena relies on a locally operated AI infrastructure:

  • Own server infrastructure: The LLMs run on the university's own high-performance computers in the University Computing Centre (URZ)

  • No external cloud services: all data processing takes place within the university network

  • GDPR-compliant implementation: complete control over data flows and model parameters

  • Seamless EGOCMS integration: AI functions are integrated directly into the existing editorial workflow

Our EGOTEC EGOCMS and lalamo.cloud team provide support.

Advantages of the Jena approach

The combination of EGOCMS with locally hosted AI models creates a solution that:

  • Isdata protection compliant according to university standards
  • Offerspractical added value for editors
  • Remainsscalable for further use cases
  • Worksindependently of external providers

Outlook: AI as a tool for better content management

With this project, the University of Jena is demonstrating how AI can be integrated into existing systems in a secure and user-centred way. The experience gained will be incorporated into the further development of EGOCMS (see also open source project gitlab.com/egotec/egocms ) and will also benefit other universities.
